Everyone needs to get a good night's sleep. Many people, however,
can't get the rest they need due to a sleep disorder known as
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This condition affects approximately 8%
of the population, making it as predominant as asthma or diabetes.
Unfortunately, only 10% of these people will be diagnosed.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when tissues in the airway collapses and
blocks the flow of air into the lungs. Since this happens during
sleep, most people do not realize that they've stopped breathing.
Depending on the severity, these lapses in breathing can occur several
times per hour and can last over two minutes in duration each time.
Left untreated, Obstructive Sleep Apnea can result in:
- Increased risk of heart attack
- increased risk of high blood pressure
- increased risk of stroke
- increased risk of Diabetes
- fatigue related motor vehicle accidents
- decreased quality of life
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a treatable
condition. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is a non surgical
treatment that delivers a flow of air through a nasal mask. The
pressure that is created, splints the airway open while you are
sleeping. CPAP therapy has been proven to be almost 100%
effective in the treatment of OSA. In fact, most people will
experience a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within the first
week.
